The Runescape Debate
On the internet, there is a game that is not spoken of, and if you mention that you play it you will be shun. The game is Runescape, a popular free to play MMORPG that not only is popular to play, but probably just as popular to bash. It is the game that seems to absorb hatred in every gaming forum out there, and no one seems to disagree. The reason no one seems to disagree, is because people are too scared to admit they like it, cause if they do then no one will back them up. Some even join in the hate just to hide the fact they play it, or have played it, and liked it. So what makes Runescape so bad? To be honest, nothing.
Runescape gets a lot of heat from anyone over the age of 16. If you’re 17 or older, you “should” be playing World of Warcraft apparently, and if you are 16 or under you “should” still be stuck on your gaming consoles playing M rated games such as Halo. Clearly this paragraph makes no sense already, but this is the feeling I get wherever I go on the internet. It’s either Runescape vs. Wow or Runescape just plain sucks no comparison. I’m not sure where this hatred started, but it seems to focus on graphics and playing by just clicking things.
The graphics debate is old and new. It had 2D graphics back about 8 years ago mixed into it’s 3D world but because of it, only dedicated players were on the game as many did not like the style. It created a healthy and very friendly game community, which no other online game has seemed to compare in. It’s the only time I ever trusted complete strangers after only a day, to help me in my quests and skills and lend items no question. Today that is different now, and sadly it’s community is like any others. But this is about graphics right? Well now the graphics are better, but standards have apparently risen and the graphics “suck” more then anything. I personally say graphics don’t make a game, the content does, so I look at the people who make the claim that the graphics suck and just ignore them as trolls or not real gamers and their lack of discussion makes me hate my own gaming kind.

The other argument is on how “easy” the game is. As time went on the game has become easier yes, but it’s not even that. People complain about how you use the mouse to click for EVERYTHING you do. It’s different yes, but it’s not for everyone. You want complicated controls or more actions as once? Then play Wow or some console games. Runescape is free to play, and upgrade to members if you desire. You loose no money off trying it and not liking it, so why the need to bash it so hard? It’s not like loosing $15 to try it out, so why be so mean about it? It angers me. I do not go around posting negative things about a game without explaining why and how much it angers me. Take responsibility for what you say, and sound intelligent when doing so. I retired Runescape years ago, but I am not bias. I know flaws when I see them, and I like hearing about other people’s experiences, even on games I personally hate. It educates me more of what makes them good and bad.
I hope you can see what I am trying to say in all of this. I do not understand why the online community is so harsh or quick to judge. I do not see why Runescape must be buried and why people cannot simply just ignore it and not play it. If I don’t like a game, I may talk about why I didn’t like it, but I don’t bash it. I certainly do not understand any of it. On a last note, I believe Runescape is a great game to get younger audiences around 12 and 13 to start online MMORPGs until they are older to get a members subscription or then play Wow. It’s the perfect starter game, hands down, and very parent friendly. A parent can play it with their child to make sure they are safe, or even get some quality bonding time with their child and not get lost with all sorts of buttons. In fact, Runescape deserves praise rather then hate. If you disagree, that’s perfectly alright, just don’t call me a “*****” on the way out, cause I’m tired of it. You make gamers look bad.
